The state government annually pay the fee for students of Kogi State origin to sit for WAEC, as a means of assisting their parents.

However, a source told the Nigerian Tribune that the amount had been on the increase yearly without corresponding increase in the number of students.

It will be recalled that in 2012, the amount paid by the government was over N200 million but it sharply increased to over N500 million in 2014.

The development the Nigerian Tribune gathered raised the suspicion of the state government which reasoned that the money did not get to the intended persons.

The Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the governor, Jacob Edi told newsmen that the fraud in the system made the government to stop the payment temporarily, adding that it would be restored after proper checks.

He said some people had “formed themselves into cabal with the sole aim of milking the state through WAEC payment,” adding that “ the government will restore the payment to the deserving students once necessary checks have been put in place.”

He informed that in the interim, parents who had paid the WAEC fee for their children could ask for a refund on presentation of their receipts, as according to him, the government was doing everything in the interest of the ordinary citizens.

He called on the people of the state to be patient with the government, saying all necessary measures would be put in place to ensure that the citizenry derive the best out of the system.
